Pew Research Center Says Gender Discrimination Takes Many Forms

Gender Discrimination Knows No Bounds

Gender discrimination and equality was a ‘hot topic’ for most of 2017. A new report from the Pew Research Center says that gender discrimination against women takes many forms. While many people may not be surprised to find that gender discrimination data shows women are targeted far more than men, many readers may be surprised at the varying personal and negative experiences reported.

Gender Discrimination Survey Data

Over the summer of 2017, the Pew Research Center conducted a survey of 4,914 adults comprised of a nationally representative group of individuals. The highlighted data from the survey was the result that women were around twice as likely to have experienced one of eight forms of gender discrimination in the workplace as their male counterparts. The breakdown of the research was as follows:

Percent ever experiencing any of these types of gender discrimination Men Women
Earned less than a man or woman doing the same job 5 25
Treated as if they were not competent 6 23
Experienced repeated small slights in the workplace 5 16
Received less support from superiors than a man or woman doing the same job 7 15
Passed over for the most important assignments 5 10
Felt isolated in the workplace 6 9
Been denied a promotion 5 7
Been turned down for a job 4 7

With so much recent focus on sexual harassment, it is interesting to see just how much gender discrimination in the workplace is not sexual in nature. Research does still indicate that women are three times as likely to report sexual harassment in the workplace than men. In this Pew Research data, 22 percent of women surveyed reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment, as opposed to only seven percent of men.

Gender Discrimination Knows No Bounds

Gender discrimination seems to know no bounds and does not itself discriminate. Women experiencing discrimination and sexual harassment report similar experiences regardless of their race, ethnicity, education, generation, or partisan standing. Some research does suggest differences in reports and the type of discrimination experienced based on these factors, but in general, it seems that gender discrimination is a broad problem with broad consequences.

Discrimination of any kind in the workplace is unacceptable. Not only does it create a negative, unethical environment, it also violates the legal rights of those targeted. Anyone who has experienced gender discrimination, or any type of discrimination in the workplace, should speak with an attorney about protecting their legal rights and finding options to preserve their financial and career stability.
