Summer is just around the corner, and for many people, that means more time traveling or enjoying the many parks and landmarks across the state. Unfortunately, summertime driving can be deceptively dangerous. While there are no icy roads, and the springtime rain and flooding risk has abated, there are other dangers of summer driving that drivers should be aware of.
In fact, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in 2014, June, July, and September each reported more than 2,800 fatal accidents each. In August 2014, there were a reported 3,037 fatal accidents.

More Motorcycles and Bicycles on the Road
Warmer and drier weather also means that there will be more motorcycles and bicycles on the roadway. Drivers should be cautious, and should obey traffic laws pertaining to motorcycles and bicycles that share the roadway. Road Congestion due to Vacationers
Vacationers traveling through and around Texas can cause road congestion, especially on weekends and peak holiday travel dates. Weather Conditions
Sun and heat are a unique danger for summer drivers. Before traveling, make sure that your vehicle is properly maintained to avoid overheating, tire blowouts, or air conditioner problems. If you are traveling a long distance, keep chilled water on hand, and take as many breaks as are needed to prevent you or your vehicle overheating.
Construction
Summer is a popular time for construction crews to work on Texas roadways. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 2005 to 2014, there were 773 fatalities from auto accidents that occurred in a construction or “work zone”. It is important to recognize this risk, allow extra travel time, and keep a calm head while driving through these areas.
