NovoPen Insulin Delivery Pens Recalled as Defective Product

defective product

Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is recalling NovoPen insulin delivery pens as a defective product as there is a risk of the cartridges cracking or breaking. A spokesperson for Novo Nordisk stated that the risk of injury or illness was low, but a recall was ordered after numerous complaints were filed with the manufacturer over breakage and related adverse events. So far, details of the adverse event reports have not been disclosed.

NovoPen Insulin Delivery Pen Recall Information

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall report, NovoPen Echo devices manufactured between August 1, 2016 and June 22, 2017 may crack or break when exposed to certain conditions, such as exposure to cleaning or household chemicals. This exposure can result in compromised cartridges and thus, a reduced amount of insulin being delivered to the user.

Individuals who rely on NovoPen devices to regulate their blood sugar levels are urged to contact Novo Nordisk immediately if they are using the potentially defective product. U.S. product batch numbers include:

  • EVG1221
  • EVG 1226
  • FVG7149
  • FVG7458
  • FVG8134
  • FVG8135

Novo Nordisk has issued a public apology for the defect, and is working alongside the FDA to ensure that patient risk is minimized as the recalled products are removed from consumer use.

Dangers of Defective Insulin Delivery Pens

Individuals with diabetes rely on insulin pens and medication to regulate their blood sugar. Un-regulated blood sugar results in a condition known as hyperglycemia, which includes symptoms like:

  • Lethargy
  • Flushed feeling
  • Lack of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness

If left untreated, hyperglycemia can escalate with more serious symptoms and side effects. Furthermore, prolonged hyperglycemia can result in serious conditions, such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Increased risk of heart attack or stroke
  • Kidney failure
  • Nerve damage
  • Glaucoma or cataracts
  • Gum disease

Anyone using NovoPen delivery pens should contact their healthcare provider immediately if they have any symptoms of hyperglycemia. Most importantly, if you believe you are having a diabetic emergency, call 911 or report to your nearest emergency room.
